The work

What curtain wall spraying involves

Curtain walling is the aluminium framing and glazing system hung off the face of a building. The factory-applied powder coating on that framing has a working life, and after fifteen to twenty-five years of UK weather it chalks, fades and loses its gloss. The frames are structurally sound. They just look finished.

Curtain wall spraying recoats them where they are. We degrease and abrade the aluminium, treat any corrosion, mask the glazing and seals, then spray a two-pack coating on site from powered access or mobile towers. Nothing is dismantled, no glazing comes out, and the building stays open.

Most people who ring us call it curtain walling refurbishment rather than spraying. Same job — and it usually comes out of a planned maintenance budget rather than a capital one.

Occupied buildings

How we work around an occupied building

Tenant disruption is the objection we hear first, and it is a fair one. Working on buildings that stay open is what this company is built around.

We run night shifts, weekend work and phased closures, so a floor, an elevation or an entrance is out of use for hours rather than weeks. Work zones are contained and sheeted, the coatings are low-odour, and access, permits and tenant notices are agreed with your facilities team before anyone arrives.

Where a programme has to be short we put more people on it — teams of four to eight sprayers on extended hours, which pulls a typical six-week programme back to two or three.

At the Radisson Blu in Leeds, the hotel and its bar carried on trading throughout, so the curtain walling was resprayed inside and out during the quietest hours.

Compliance

Accreditations, RAMS and insurance

Everything your procurement team asks for, in writing, before we get on site.

USP Coatings is CHAS accredited and every operative holds a valid CSCS card. We carry £10 million public liability insurance and send the certificate with the quote. Full risk assessments and method statements — RAMS — are issued for approval before any work begins, on every project, without being asked.

Specification

The coating system and colour matching

We spray aluminium curtain walling, powder-coated framing, spandrel and infill panels, and the cladding around them — composite panels, profiled metal cladding, fibre cement board, steel and render. Where a curtain wall job runs into adjacent cladding spraying, it is the same team and the same visit.

Preparation decides how long a coating lasts, so it is where the time goes: degrease, abrade, treat corrosion, prime. The topcoat is a UV-stable commercial system chosen for the substrate and the exposure of the elevation.

We match any RAL, BS or NCS reference, including brand and planning-condition colours, and spray out samples on site for sign-off first. The finished system carries a guarantee of up to 20 years.

Refurbishment

Curtain wall spraying vs replacement

Replacement is a capital project. Refurbishment by spraying is a maintenance one. If the framing is sound and only the finish has failed, the second is usually the right answer.

Spraying in place Full replacement
Cost A fraction of replacement £150–£300+ per m²
Programme Weeks Months
Building use Stays open and occupied Floors or elevations out of use
Glazing Stays in, masked and protected Removed and replaced
Colour Any RAL, BS or NCS reference Limited to system ranges
Waste Existing framing retained Framing and glazing stripped out

Spraying does not fix a failed thermal break, a leaking gasket or corroded structure. That is what the survey is for — if replacement is the right call on your building, we will say so.

Cost

What curtain wall spraying costs

Every elevation is different, so the figure comes from the survey. These are the ranges our commercial projects sit inside.

Typical commercial project£10,000 – £100,000+
Cladding re-coating£15,000 – £80,000
Commercial painting£10,000 – £50,000

What moves the number: the area of framing, the condition of the existing coating, corrosion treatment, access at height, and whether the work has to happen out of hours. For comparison, full cladding replacement runs at £150–£300+ per m². The survey is free and the quote that follows is fixed price.

FAQs

Curtain wall spraying FAQs

Do you work on occupied buildings?

Yes — it is our speciality. We use low-odour coatings, contained work zones and flexible scheduling including night shifts, so tenants and operations are not disrupted.

How long does a curtain wall spraying project take?

Most single-building projects are completed within two to four weeks, depending on size and how much surface preparation is needed. Multi-building sites are phased to minimise disruption across the estate.

Do you provide method statements and RAMS?

Always. We are CHAS accredited, all operatives hold valid CSCS cards, and full method statements and risk assessments are provided before any work begins — standard on every project.

What insurance do you carry?

£10 million public liability cover. The certificate is supplied with the quote, and we will complete your own vendor or pre-qualification forms on request.

What guarantee do you offer?

All our work comes with a coating guarantee of up to 20 years. The systems we use are UV-stable and commercial grade, tested to hold colour and finish for decades rather than years.

Can you match a specific colour or RAL reference?

Yes. We match any RAL, BS or NCS reference. If you have an existing scheme, brand guidelines or a planning requirement, we match it exactly, and we spray out samples for approval before starting.

Which surfaces can you spray?

Curtain walling, powder-coated aluminium framing, spandrel panels, composite and profiled metal cladding, fibre cement board, steel, concrete and render. If you are unsure, the free survey confirms suitability.

What should I ask a curtain wall spraying contractor before hiring?

Accreditations, insurance cover, the coating specification and guarantee, and how they intend to work around your occupants. There is a longer list in questions to ask a curtain wall spraying contractor and in why curtain wall paint matters.

Where we work

We are a national contractor and we go to the building. Curtain wall spraying teams work across England, Scotland and Wales, from a single office block to a multi-site estate rollout. Head office is in Bradford. Send us the postcode and we will confirm survey availability.
